VLC

VLC is an upcoming multimedia player app for Windows 10. It is being developed as a “universal app”. It has an interesting and functional interface and packs a lot of exclusive features. Still, it is currently in beta stage, it has many issues, thus it is not recommended as your main music app. However, it is more reliable and fluid than Zbox.

- Sort album by artist/date/name and ascending or descending order
- Album list with art

- No Xbox Music Player playlist or collection compatibility
- No artist screen access from the now playing screen
- No OneDrive music stream integration
- No FLAC or lossless file format support
- Several bugs and stability issues

Xbox Music Player

Xbox Music Player (or just "Music") is the default player for Windows Phone. Even though it lacks many wanted features, because of its stability and reliability it is the best music player yet on the platform.

As said, there are many features missing from the app. Here are some of them.

- Gapless playback.

- FLAC and other lossless file formats support.

- Artist/album art auto download.

- Artist/album art manual set.

- Tag editing.

- Recently added artists/albums/tracks list.

- Most played artists/albums/tracks list.

- Like/dislike artist/album/track feature.

- Integrated equalizer.

- lyrics show from tags or internet.

- Last.fm scrobbling support.

- landscape mode and other UI improvements.

- Customization settings.

Music Player+

Music Player+ is a simple alternative for listening to your music. However, it doesn’t bring new functionalities compared the Xbox Music app, it misses some others, and it has long resuming a starting times. Because of this, this is not a recommended app.

Pros:

- Xbox Music library compatibility.

- App color accent setting.

- It’s possible to access the artist tab from the now playing screen.

Cons:

- No Xbox Music playlist compatibility.

- Uninteresting interface.

- Long app start and resume times.

Zbox

Zbox is one of the best music apps for Windows Phone. Still, it has some rough edges that need to be polished before using it as your main music app.

Pros:

- Most played artists, albums and tracks list.

- Recently added artists, albums and tracks list.

- Enhanced collection search with album, artist, tracks and playlists tabs.

- Album art automatic download or from folder/tag show.

- FLAC support.

- Last.fm integration.

- Several settings.

- Beautiful and fluid interface.

Cons:

- Only manual and full collection update that can take several minutes.

- Several bugs that may crash the app or ruin the user experience.

- No OneDrive music stream integration.

- No Xbox music player playlist compatibility.

- It’s not possible to access the artist tab from the now playing screen.
